Mark Slavin's Litil Planet dubstep mix

So, this is my new dubstep mix I thought I'd make due to the fact that I'm playing my first full dubstep set ever at café Protest, night called BASS IT!. Made this one with Traktor, it's actually quite fun, fiddling around with all digital content - and there are plenty of digital-only releases in this set.

To kick it off, there is a track by Breakage that Digital Soundboy gave away for free, it's still available in their Downloads section. Followed by Instra:Mental's (another name which is more associated with drum&bass) incredible Futurist, rather obscure song about wedged chickens getting treatment by the Dutchman Martyn, brilliant new Ramadanman, and other goodies, this mix has everything from techy end to soulful. Not to mention Estonia's own dubstep badboy L-OW with two tunes. And D1 under Dub Police is probably one of dubstep's sweetest moments up to date. And some melancholic rock'n'roll style vibes from Distance.

Anyway, each of the tune has a story to tell, so fetch the mix here >

some new mirrors:

Dubstep session 17.06.2008

This is my very first dubstep mix. Come to think of it, I only had 7 or 8 dubstep records at the time, all of which were used up in this set. Still, in my own and not so humble opinion I managed to make a good one. Some of the tunes aren't exactly dubstep, or weren't classified as such at the time of their release (Vipersquad under Flytronix's Solaria records, anyone? 1999 biz!), and I wasn't that fond of dubstep at the time, but this mix has been on constant rotation in my car. After all, I made this mix for myself, like I mostly do - to know my tunes.

Anyway, here is the mix > http://www.sendspace.com/file/40tgif

1. Geiom - Zalim Maar Daala (BERKANE SOL)
2. Vex'd - 3rd Choice (Loefah remix) (PLANET MU)
3. Skream - Pass The Red Stripe (SOUL JAZZ)
4. D1 - Speed (TEMPA)
5. Vipersquad - Future Noir (Deckard's Dream) (SOLARIA)
6. Skream - Subs Island (SOUL JAZZ)
7. Horsepower Productions - To The Beat Y'all (TEMPA)
8. Darqwan - Confused (TECTURE)
9. L.D - Clock Watching (RINGO)
10. Horsepower Productions - Fist Of Fury (TEMPA)

Expression mixed by Mark Slavin

A long, long time ago I wanted to make a mix of purely Estonian and Finnish tunes, majority of which was unreleased or not that known at the time. I probably could have the entire mix as I tried to do it, but somehow it didn't feel like cheating if I added a couple of tunes which weren't exactly according to the standard. Here is the original Dreamworld by Finland's best, Physics - the tune that eventually got remixed by none other than D-Bridge. Then there's another version of Nemos' Kuues Meel - by Aural Imbalance, a very, very overlooked release; I already mentioned Gnome and his "Leadium" earlier on, but here is the original. Dice is the moniker under which people from around of Finnish Gulf have known the dubstep don Tes La Rok, before he discovered dubstep. I think the tune in the mix was also released later under Raul Saaremets's Umblu imprint under a different name, on his album.

Stare is another Estonian fellow who even got signed to DSCI4 and Renegade records under the name of Crescent, which eventually leads the mix to Rip's epic "Klaasikillumäng". Now, not many people have heard of him, and I don't think anyone will unless he gets his interest back to electronic music and stops being so fucking lazy, pardon mi french, but this guy was possibly one of the most ingenious people I've ever known. He used to be my classmate for 11 years and almost like a brother, where I lacked in chaos and strived in order, he was the exact opposite. This tune was released on a very limited 1997 A-Reen CD which withheld tracks from Estonian amateur artists, of which some have gone bigger (Def Räädu), and others have either chosen another paths or just forgotten. On a side note, it also contained my own crappy electro experiment ;).

Further on, in this mix, is one of Inztance's earlier works, later on this chap would start a label called Red Dragon and now he is working with Trisector from Finland and is signed to Vampire, Levitation, and was voted no 1 Estonian d&b producer of 2007 and 2008. And still has my AKG headphones, the bugger. :D

Here, however, is the entire mix for your pleasure> http://www.sendspace.com/file/y6cla9

all Omni Trio mix vol 2

Because I haven't heard an Omni Trio tune I don't adore, here is another mix with Omni Trio tunes from the post-rave period. To be absolutely honest I was too stoned to notice that I played Skeleton Keys remix twice. No, I rarely do that, in case you ask :) In fact, weed is easily abused. Nevertheless, the mix, in my own opinion, is absolutely fantastic.

So, I guess I don't need to say Rob Haigh is one of the best things that has happened to drum&bass, in my opinion. To praise his work I made this little fast potpourri of his work - pure vinyl business!

all Paradox mix

Because Dev Paradox was about to do a live gig at my friend's Vxn's event series LIFT in 2007, I thought an all Dev mix would be in order. Frankly, the gig itself was anything but ordinary, Dev on the mic + floppy discs and lots of ancient hardware I had not seen in ages :) Shame I was too wasted.

Offkey Night promotional mix

Once upon a time, there was void in techno-dnb. And that void was filled by Raiden, who had moved to Estonia, and had a label called Offkey - still has actually. So the clever promoters had an idea, to make a regular Offkey event, which was christened as Offkey Night, and to which I was assigned a resident - and was happy to do so, as it was a good series and I had opportunities to play harder stuff than usual. Not to mention - had craploads of fun as well. This form of music never takes prisoners at all, so put on some clean underwear and beware before following this link :

Tallinn At Night vol 1

Here's another mix I did, called Tallinn At Night. Don't really know why I named it like that, but possibly because all this atmospheric, beautiful, haunting, technical music made an association with my home city in my mind. It has to be the soundtrack for cruising at night on Tallinn's outskirts while having a glimpse on how the scenery varies from concrete ruins to dark green forests, or driving through the gray residential jungle.

In this mix, also tunes of Estonian or semi-Estonian origin can be found, including some unreleased gems such as Teebee's remix of Psynoid - Factory which was supposed to be released on Inztance's label Red Dragon. Unfortunately, the label never made it past the debut release so the tune went to the big black abyss of abandoned tunage. Also, I'd point out the excellent Skeema remix of our own boys' Nemos' single Kuues Meel (The Sixth Sense in translation). The somewhat modest boys are still active and having bigger plans than ever, go check out their website at http://nemos.ee/.

You possibly don't know who is Gnome - but this talented guy has mostly done digital art as of recent. However, in the past he has also had his share on atmospheric drum&bass, so he made a tune called Leadium and somehow magically it got remixed by none other than Hungarian talent ICR. I don't even have a clue if it got released in the meanwhile, but I'm happy it's featured in this mix. Check Gnome's painting blog at http://kaitpaint.blogspot.com/.

so, hello to whoever reads this blog

Let me get this straight, I'm not into blogging. I don't care if anyone reads my thoughts about how I took a warm and stinky crap in a toilet and how I feel about the financial crisis or human relationships because of it. Or something else as exciting. I just want to post some mixes and photos, once in a while. And maybe advertise an event. Or some other mixes I find great. So don't expect it to be any kind of diary - there is WAY too much personal information online nowadays anyway. More, than anyone could ever care about. Besides, like a rather large amount of people, I'm damn lazy and cannot guarantee I'll fill this space regularly. However, it will be a good source for excellent music, mixed well. Not just drum&bass - although I do spin it most of the time.

About me? If you want to know, look for my profile on Facebook. Don't be shy :)

So, I'll just start posting some mixes, oldish and newish. Here's this thing I made for reggae.ee website in 2006, a special Xmas greeting full of more-averagely-than-usual Jamaican influenced drum&bass, rolling nicely:

I believe this one can pretty much stand the test of time. At least, to me personally. Memorable moments : Theory's Conquering Lion (can anyone please tell me what song does it sample?), Digital's Sax Dub (same question), and among some well-known classics a Chase The Devil bootleg.
